What Is Workplace Orientation and What Is Its Purpose?



Job orientation, also known as employee orientation or onboarding, is the process of orienting new workers to their function, the corporate culture, regulations, and procedures, and preparing them for success in their new career. The goal of job orientation is to make new workers feel welcome, grasp their job responsibilities, and rapidly become effective members of the team. Job orientation can help employees feel that they are accepted and relaxed in the organization from the first day of work. It also gives employees an understanding of the rules and guidelines of the company so that there is no confusion and increases confidence. AIHR. (2021)

 


One of the main advantages of job orientation is that it helps organizations to save time by teaching all new recruits at once as opposed to training each new employee separately. Of course, saving time ultimately translates into saving money. It aids individuals in adjusting to a new workplace. Even individuals who already possess the necessary abilities and can thus get into their new work right away are likely to value a transitional time that enables them to orient themselves. New hires are arriving at an organization with their own ideas of what is and aren't proper in the workplace. The Human resource manager should explain and make sure that everyone is on the same page which would help integrate new employees into the corporate culture. There won't be any uncertainty about the tasks performed by new staff because it may result in several misunderstandings in the future. Introducing new hires to their coworkers and managers before they begin working might speed up team integration and increase the level of productivity. It can aid in improving worker retention. Job orientations frequently enable new hires to get to know their coworkers (Spencer, 2020)

A job orientation would typically include the below.

2.      Job responsibilities: A detailed explanation of the employee's job duties, including their role within the organization.

3.      Safety and security: Explanation of the company's safety policies and procedures, emergency procedures, and any security measures.

4.      Culture and values: Explanation of the company's culture, values, and expectations for employee behavior.

5.      Training and development: Explanation of any training and development programs that the employee will be expected to participate in.

6.       Policies and procedures: an overview of the company's policies and procedures, such as vacation time, sick leave, and other benefits.

I think orientation is one of the essential functions that come under the HRM department because new joiners come to the organization without having any idea about the business, hence orientation is highly important for systematic adaption to the organization. Here cultural adaption is highly important, As highlighted by the author, orientation should contain the roles and responsibilities, which help to enhance confidence, further effective orientation should contain the organizational policies and procedures.
